Simply close your eyes for a moment and listen to the whisper of the wind as it brushes against the tall conifers, interrupted only by the distant call of a bearded vulture – also known as the ‘lamb vulture’ – and you will suddenly find yourself enveloped by the tranquillity of unspoilt nature. In Switzerland, where around 15 per cent of the national territory is protected by nature reserves, environmental conservation is a concrete model of sustainable development that combines the preservation of biodiversity with the revival of slow tourism. Through a network of well-connected protected areas rich in history, visitors can discover a region that preserves centuries-old traditions and outstanding local food and wine specialities.
