Ten itineraries for discovering Italia and Europe on two wheels
In Sardinia along the Santa Barbara Mining Trail
Arriving on an island and getting around almost all of it by bicycle. This is possible in Sardinia with the Ciclovia della Sardegna, a project launched in 2014 with the aim of developing a Cycling Mobility System throughout the island, promoting the use of bicycles both for everyday travel and for sporting, recreational and tourist activities. The aim is to make the island more accessible and attractive all year round with a more sustainable and varied tourism, linked to the nature, landscape, history and culture of the island. The Ciclovia della Sardegna is a ring-route of over 1100 km designed to unite the entire island. It is subdivided into 19 routes, 18 of which are entirely cyclable and 1 to be cycled in bike+train mode (CS 1 from Sassari to Alghero). The route allows you to cycle along the coast (from Alghero to Cagliari via Olbia) and inland, alternating between sea stages, archaeological sites (such as Barumini) and natural parks, with the possibility of hiring bikes. Along the route and in the surrounding areas, various activities can be carried out. For example, exploring the Costa del Sud, pedalling on a 50 km loop connecting Chia, Domus de Maria and Teulada, immersed in the Mediterranean maquis and close to unspoilt beaches. Another alternative is the Santa Barbara Mining Trail. This is a 550-km loop starting from Iglesias, perfect for MTB and gravel enthusiasts, and ideal for discovering disused mines, cliffs, and breathtaking views such as the Pan di Zucchero.
