All the beauty of Livorno in ten summer adventures
Modigliani, the Mercato delle Vettovaglie and the cinema bistro
The Mercato delle Vettovaglie is linked to the artistic story of Amedeo Modigliani. This structure stands, in fact, between the Fosso Reale where the three fake heads were cunningly and somewhat ironically thrown and the Via Gherardi del Testa where Modì really had his studio. Neo-classical in the architecture of its central body and eclectic in its glass and steel ceiling, 95 metres long by 26 metres wide, this 131-year-old building features eight caryatids bearing the fruits of the earth. Now the shops tell the story of the gastronomic fabric of the city and its surroundings: from the Busti cheese factory to the Pastificio Chiesa, from the white eggs fed with goat's milk of Lari Parisi to the ponce of the Bar Camici, one can have a sublime experience. Above all, choose Fabio Baroncini's bistro Alle Vettovaglie because this ex-worker and engineer not only proposes typical dishes such as chickpeas and herring, anchovies alla povera, and the cacciucco sandwich, but also continuously engages in cultural initiatives such as cinema, theatre, and photographic exhibitions inside the bistro and this first market in Europe in terms of cubage. Also interesting to visit is the new Darsena (dockyard) built in the former Orlando shipyards founded in 1866 for its interior design by the sea.
