All the beauty of Livorno in ten summer adventures
The Old Fortress and the Pentagonal City
We owe the unmistakable silhouette of the Fortezza Vecchia to the inspiration of Antonio Sangallo. Its proximity to the floating pachyderms of the large ferries moored in readiness to set sail for Corsica would seem to crush it and considerably reduce its architectural impact on the contemporary city. Instead, after walking around its perimeter, one becomes familiar with this bastion composed of the medieval castle, towers and bastions dating from the Renaissance. The manor rests on a natural cliff. In particular, the Canaviglia Bastion remains imprinted for its power and acoustics. Along the tour route, one encounters domes hinting at the influence of Brunelleschi, while on the walls are photographs as part of the exhibition 'Mano- Oltre il Varco' (Hand - Beyond the Passage) dedicated to the protagonists of port life in Livorno. Walking a few tens of metres, one makes a remarkable leap backwards, finding oneself in front of the Monument of the Four Moors who are chained under the statue of Ferdinand I de Medici: the slaves of the Ottoman dominions show features and features of African and Asian origin.
