Passignano sul Trasimeno and the boat race on the lake

Overlooking the waters of Lake Trasimeno, the Umbrian village of Passignano is clustered around its medieval fortress, offering panoramic views of the lake. From 19 to 26 July, the village comes alive for the Palio delle Barche, a historic event that re-enacts ancient local rivalries. The competition follows a unique format: the four districts first compete on the water in rowing boats, then race on foot through the narrow, steep streets of the historic centre carrying the boats on their shoulders, before concluding with a final stretch of rowing. During the festival, the village is transformed by the opening of the neighbourhood taverns, where visitors can sample dishes made with lake fish and traditional Umbrian recipes, accompanied by musical performances and costumed parades involving the whole community.
