Italia on Stage: two months of entertainment in town squares from north to south
Sarnano, where the medieval past rediscovers its ancient currency
Situated at the foot of the Sibillini Mountains, the village of Sarnano retains a historic centre built of fired brick, characterised by winding alleyways and distinctive stairways. On 9 August, the sound of drums heralds the start of the Palio del Serafino, a competition in which the four historic districts vie for victory in traditional games. Immediately afterwards, from 11 to 14 August, the ‘Castrum Sarnani’ event brings to life the atmosphere of the late 13th century. Upon passing through Porta Brunforte, visitors can exchange their euros for ‘denaro’, a coin specially minted for purchases in taverns and craft markets. At the panoramic Taverna della Luna, historical dishes prepared with ingredients available in pre-Columbian times are served, whilst the squares come alive with performances by travelling musicians, ancient fencing duels and shows by jugglers and fire-eaters.
