Sperlinga and the historical re-enactments in the shadow of the rock-cut castle

In the Sicilian hinterland, the village of Sperlinga, in the province of Enna, is built around its castle, hewn out of the rock. On 16 August, the village hosts two events that combine history and gastronomy: the Sagra del Tortone and the election of the Dama dei Castelli di Sicilia. The afternoon begins with a tasting of tortone, a local fried dessert dusted with sugar and cinnamon, followed by a historical procession featuring participants in medieval costume representing various towns across the island. In the evening, the historical re-enactment retraces the events of the siege linked to the Sicilian Vespers, enhanced by sand art performances, and continues with the proclamation of the Dama, a symbolic figure of local tradition. The day concludes late at night with a musical fireworks display that illuminates the fortress, offering a vivid celebration of Sicilian historical culture.
