Spilimbergo and the Renaissance charm of La Macia

Known for its prestigious school of mosaic artists, Spilimbergo, in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, boasts a historic centre rich in frescoed palaces and artistic treasures. From 13 to 16 August, this Friulian town offers a journey back in time with the ‘Rievocazione Storica della Macia’, an event named after the ancient local unit of measurement for textiles. For four days, the main streets host a Renaissance market, military encampments, jousting tournaments and displays by flag-wavers, musicians and fire-eaters. Among the most significant events are the evocative Procession of the Candle and the Palio dell’Assunta, which culminate in the historical procession of the Macia and the Sword. It offers a wonderful opportunity to admire the local architectural treasures, such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore, and to savour the traditional cuisine served in the village’s historic taverns.
