Italia on Stage: two months of entertainment in town squares from north to south
Pergola and the traditional parade in the heart of the Middle Ages
Famous for housing its gilded Roman-era bronzes, the town of Pergola in the Marche region boasts a historic centre rich in churches and stately homes of considerable value. On 21 and 22 August, this setting provides the backdrop for “Pergola Medievale”, a historical re-enactment created to celebrate the arrival in the town of the relics of the patron saints Secondo, Agabito and Giustina. The main event is the historical procession, in which participants in period costume accompany the saints’ reliquary on a cart drawn by oxen, flanked by groups of flag-wavers and musicians from various Italian regions. Among the new highlights is the Palio di San Secondo competition, in which local young people compete in the ‘Gioco degli Stracci’ (Rag Game) and a tug-of-war. Strolling through the narrow streets, visitors can explore the traditional craft markets and sample local culinary specialities.
