An endless hiking paradise in the wilderness

A more demanding hike, with a difference in altitude of over 500 metres, is the one that leads from St. Gerturde to the Fontana Bianca (Weißbrunnsee) reservoir, a body of water at an altitude of around 1900 metres that is already part of the Stelvio National Park. To get there, it takes about two hours of walking through the forest, taking path 109 past the parish church and turning onto path 105: the well-trained can extend the route through a wilderness reminiscent of Narnia, passing by the Malga dei Pini (Fiechter Alm, open from June to October, where a taste of home-made cheeses is a must) and skirting the shore of a small natural fishermen's lake (Fischersee); the lazier can reach the village via an asphalted mountain road that climbs from Santa Gertrude for about 6 km. In Fontana Bianca, you can relax on the shores of the lake and treat yourself to a leisurely break at the tables of the Weißbrunner Bergrestaurant or climb a few more metres up to the Weißbrunner Almhutte, a small alpine hut where you can eat traditional dishes.
