Between historic farms and thousand-year-old larches in search of the authentic Val D'Ultimo

Five hamlets to discover a valley that tastes of antiquity

The Ultental (this is the German name for the valley, while the wording in Solander is Val d'Òutem) branches off for about 40 km in a south-westerly direction from Merano, from the source of the Falschauer stream near the Oberen Weißbrunner (White Fountain) to the Gaulschlucht gorge near Lana. The feature that immediately catches the eye is its classic picture-postcard mountain landscape: larch forests, peaks over 3,000 metres still snow-capped, and skilfully-cut alpine pastures dotted here and there with old wooden farmhouses. There is no shortage of settlements - the small villages of San Pancrazio, Santa Valburga, San Nicola, (where one can visit the museum of history and popular culture), Pracupola and Santa Gertrude, united in the municipality of Ultimo - but the sensation that Val d'Ultimo immediately gives is that of an environment that is still little anthropised (just under 3,000 resident inhabitants) and perfectly preserved.
