Between historic farms and thousand-year-old larches in search of the authentic Val D'Ultimo
St Gertrude, the last (and highest) village in the Valley
The most atmospheric and also the last village in the valley, Santa Gertrude, at an altitude of over 1,500 metres, is a strategic starting point for excursions to the Val Martello and Val di Rabbi, in the eastern Cevedale group. To discover the secrets of the place, a must-see is the 'Lahner Säge', the old Lahner Sawmill, at the entrance to the village, which houses one of the most detailed visitor centres in the Stelvio National Park. Just above, perched on a hill, is a small church dating from the 14th century, later renovated in the mid-1600s (doors, round-headed windows and barrel vaulting belong to that period) with its iconic tower and outdoor area from which you can admire a beautiful panorama of the valley furrowed by the Rio Valsura.
