Events, experiences and more: Journey to Olympic venues 'away' from the competitions

by Lucilla Incorvati and Gianni Rusconi

The Winter Games are returning to the Italian mountains twenty years after Turin 2006 and seventy years after the historic edition in Cortina in 1956: the novelty, compared to the past, is the widespread model of these Olympics, distributed between two cities and along the Alpine arc of three regions. From 6 to 22 February, Lombardy, Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige will be the stage for an event that goes well beyond the 1,146 medals up for grabs and the 3,500 athletes expected from over 90 countries. The opening will be in Milan, where the competitions on ice will also be held, the closing at the Arena in Verona; in between six host locations, from Bormio to Cortina, from Livigno to Anterselva, from Tesero to Predazzo. From 6 to 15 March it will then be the turn of the Paralympics: the ceremonies are scheduled at the Arena in Verona, the competitions in Cortina, Milan Santa Giulia and Val di Fiemme. These will be Games for athletes and spectators but also for tourists and fans who will travel to destinations close to the official venues in search of alternative experiences to being on the competition fields. Here are ideas and places to breathe in the Olympic atmosphere in a special way.
