In Borca di Cadore, where the mountain is a natural gym for everyone

With the Winter Olympics only 15 kilometres away, there is a corner of Veneto that has made history in Italian tourism and that now shines again. It is Cadore, in particular Borca di Cadore, very close to but very different from Cortina d'Ampezzo. An authentic town with an ancient history (mentioned for the first time in an ancient document of 1331 that indicated it as the place where the Cadore nuns were given oil for the lamps in some churches), surrounded by the evocative beauty of Mount Pelmo and Mount Antelao. Here, in the mid-1950s, Enrico Mattei, the enlightened chairman of Eni, realised the first form of corporate welfare by creating a mountain holiday village for employees and their families. The project, which bore the signature of architect Edoardo Gellner, involved 270 holiday homes, plus a church, two hotels and a colony, as well as a beautiful forest. After years of passing from one property to another, it has now been reborn in Corte delle Dolomiti, a widespread hospitality project in more than 120 hectares of private forest on the slopes of Mount Antelao as the recovery and enhancement of the former ENI Village. It includes the Hotel Boite (named after the stream that crosses the Cadore valley, with 84 elegant rooms and the original furnishings from the 1960s), the Corte Residence, the Corte SPA (also open to outsiders), the Campsite (currently being set up) and the Mountain Lab, where outsiders can also sign up to take part in orienteering courses, indoor and outdoor sport climbing, forest bathing, e-bike excursions and workshops. And then between the residence and the hotel is the SuperCorte Adventure Park, a large outdoor play area where children and adults can have fun in the wonderful natural gym that is the mountain.
