Greece: Elafonissi Beach (Crete), the Caribbean of the Mediterranean

Tripadvisor, the online platform that collects reviews, ratings and recommendations, has once again compiled the Travelers' Choice Beaches Awards for 2025, declaring Elafonissi beach in Crete, Greece, as the winner. It is described as the 'Caribbean of the Mediterranean' for its white beach with pink hues and the turquoise of its warm waters. Right in front of the beach is the small island of Elafonissi, which, depending on the tide, is sometimes connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of sand, while at high tide it is a real island that can be reached by walking out to sea in knee-deep water. There is only free beach on the island. The back part is perhaps the most bucolic and is characterised by small bays where peace and tranquillity reign. One of the most beautiful times to visit is when the sun sets over the waters of the Libyan Sea giving a panorama of wonderful colours.
