Stories of herdsmen in the valleys of Ayas, Gressoney and Valsesia

The dairy sheep of the Bagnod family

In addition to the Rossett sheep, an ancient Valle d'Aosta breed from which excellent wool can be obtained, lately in Val d'Ayas the alpine pastures are dotted with white clouds in summer: these are the dairy sheep, those of the Bagnod family, an excellent example of mountain entrepreneurship and also of research, as far as high altitude farming is concerned. Their farm and agritourism La Tchavana (a word that in Franco-Provençal Valle d'Aosta dialect indicates a rural mountain pasture building) is open until 1 November. Here, at an altitude of 2,000 metres at Alpe Metsan, above Antagnod, it is possible to buy the products of this sheep's milk processing. The cheeses are stored in one of the highest cellars in Europe: the Crotta de Metsan.
