From Piedmont to Friuli, the pleasure of skiing (and snowshoeing) in the March sunshine

Madesimo, Alpine scenery on the Swiss border

Madesimo Ski area

At an altitude of almost 1,550 metres, nestled in the northernmost part of Lombardy, Madesimo is the icon of Valchiavenna and a destination that experiences one of its best moments in March, thanks to still very good snow conditions and longer, brighter days that enhance the breadth of the Alpine landscape. The ski area covers about 60 kilometres of slopes and, while waiting for the reopening of Val di Lei (the new cable car will come into operation next season) and the historic Canalone track that descends from Pizzo Groppera with a difference in altitude of more than 600 metres, there is no shortage of challenging tracks that descend to the village through the woods and the snowpark structured for freestyle and snowboarding. March is also the right month to broaden the experience beyond alpine skiing. A few kilometres from the centre, in fact, is the hamlet of Montespluga, a locality on the border with Switzerland and surrounded by peaks of over three thousand metres: until late spring, also thanks to the closure of the road pass, here one can enjoy an immaculate alpine scenery where one can practice winter sports in silence. Montespluga, not by chance, is the home of Homeland, a reference point for ski mountaineering enthusiasts, where it is possible to rent all the equipment necessary for excursions on skis or even with snowshoes and to participate in courses and outings with Alpine Guides, to experience a 'night camp', with overnight stays in a tent and two days of high-altitude exploration.
