From Piedmont to Friuli, the pleasure of skiing (and snowshoeing) in the March sunshine
Ratschings, Monte Cavallo and Ladurns: snow sports on a human scale
For those who prefer medium-sized ski resorts, never too crowded, especially in the low season, and very well equipped and maintained, there are three complementary resorts between Sterzing and the Upper Eisack Valley. The Racines Passo Giovo area offers trails for all abilities - mostly red runs - served by state-of-the-art facilities, and the descent back to the valley station through the forest is one of the most pleasant. For lunch, the Saxnerhütte, directly on the Saxner piste, is a well-established reference for pork knuckle. An address that makes your stay even more enjoyable beyond skiing is in the nearby Val Ridanna, where you will find the 4-star Hotel S Gassenhof with its double wellness area and panoramic infinity pool (25 km of cross-country skiing trails start near the hotel) and the Genusshaus Mount Becher, a space dedicated to artisanal production of beer, spirits, cheese and coffee. Mount Cavallo, on the other hand, is the ideal choice for those staying in Vipiteno: the cableway station leading to the high-altitude slopes can also be reached by a free train for affiliated hotels, and the same cableway also provides access to the 10-kilometre toboggan run, one of the longest in Europe, which can also be practised at night on selected days. Finally, Ladurns, in the side valley Val di Fleres, is a small (18 km of slopes) sunny area at the foot of Tribulaun where skiing alternates with one of the most popular toboggan runs in South Tyrol, with its approximately 6.5 kilometres leading from the Ladurner Alm down to the valley.
