From Piedmont to Friuli, the pleasure of skiing (and snowshoeing) in the March sunshine
Season finale in Val Gardena between sport and spectacle
In the setting of the Unesco World Heritage Dolomites, skiing and the slopes of the district (connected to the Dolomiti Superski circuit) of Selva Val Gardena, Santa Cristina and Ortisei remain the starting point in March. But it is the combination of competition, music and sociability at high altitude that dictates the timing of a season finale that goes beyond the sporting dimension, transforming the closing of the lifts into a widespread event between refuges and the village centre. From 19 to 28 of this month, Rock the Dolomites returns, a series of live concerts on the terraces at high altitude, where rock can be listened to with skis still on, amidst outdoor tables and snow-capped peaks in the background. On 21 March, it is time for the Spring Race Party, an out-of-the-ordinary costume race held on the La Longia slope (among the longest in the Dolomites) and involving 50 teams of six participants led by a ski instructor. The weekend of 28 and 29 March is instead dominated by the Gardenissima, a not-to-be-missed event for downhill enthusiasts: about 700 participants including amateurs and World Cup athletes (plus 300 kids for the Kids session on Sunday) at the starting gate to face a 6-kilometre giant slalom. The curtain falls on the snow season from 1 to 6 April with the Winter Finals: six days in which Selva becomes an 'Alpine lifestyle' hub with events at altitude (from Dantercepies to Piz Seteur via Baita Salei) alternating DJ sets and local cuisine.
