Val Venosta, magical winter in the silence of the Stelvio Nature Park

Val Venosta - Trafoi

You say Val Venosta and you think of the easternmost portion of South Tyrol, the one that looks towards the border with Switzerland and Austria. Among the many valleys that make it up there is also the one that leads to Trafoi and the unspoilt or almost untouched scenery of the Stelvio National Park. Winter has arrived late here this year, but still offers days on the snow that can be unforgettable. For those who ski and want to plough the slopes so dear to a legend of the sport such as Gustavo Thoeni, the experience not to be missed is to treat oneself to a day in the small ski resort with three ski lifts and some twenty kilometres of slopes, including the one that from an altitude of 2,400 metres descends through the woods down to the valley along steep slopes for 900 metres of altitude difference. Between one descent and the next, a stop is a must on the terrace at 2,250 metres of the Forcola refuge, a favourite destination also for those who climb to the top with snowshoes or ski mountaineering skis and want to contemplate the majesty of the Ortles Cevedale massif. For walkers, on the other hand, from the centre of Trafoi (where you can stay at the Thoeni family's Hotel Bellavista or at the Hotel Madatsch) an easy and pleasant walk of about 2.5 km through snow-covered meadows and a spruce forest leads to the little church of the Three Holy Fountains, a place of Marian pilgrimage since the 15th century: a magical place where you can breathe in the silence beneath the imposing peak of Madatsch.
