From Piedmont to Abruzzo: the snow season kicks off with downhill runs, snowshoeing and wellness
Livigno and Bormio, Olympic experiences and emotions in Alta Valtellina
The snow season in Alta Valtellina promises to be particularly significant in view of the Winter Olympic Games, with Livigno and Bormio as the stars of the event. In little Tibet, the lifts opened on 29 November and will remain in operation until 3 May, with a brief restriction of 5% of the skiable area (115 km of slopes on both sides of the valley) between the end of January and 22 February during the snowboard and freestyle competitions. Many, as usual, are the experiences offered to tourists and fans that go beyond skiing, from the spectacle of the Super-G World Cup scheduled on 27 December to the city's cross-country skiing ring (already active in October thanks to snowfarming), from the entertainment services accessible in the futuristic Mottolino valley station to the wellness proposals of Aquagranda, from the refined gastronomic offer (five Livigno restaurants included in the Michelin Guide 2025: Camana Veglia, Stua Noa Fine Dining, Al Persef, Kosmo Taste the Mountain and La Pòsa) to experiences to experience the snow in an exclusive way at dawn and dusk. The winter season in Bormio starts on 5 December and ends on 12 April, with some restrictions during the Olympic period. The area, which also includes Santa Caterina (where the Deborah Compagnoni slope stands out, which can also be skied at night) and Cima Piazzi/San Colombano (suitable for families) offers 110 km of slopes and boasts the largest skiable difference in altitude in Italy, with the jewel in the crown of the legendary Stelvio slope, the theatre of the downhill race. Bormio is also synonymous with wellbeing (a visit to the Bagni Vecchi of QC Terme is not to be missed), tradition (a visit to the Braulio bitter museum) and nature itineraries for snowshoeing in the evocative scenery of Valdidentro and the Stelvio National Park.
